A surge is a burst of energy that exceeds the voltage and amperage capacity of downstream equipment, causing equipment damage if not suppressed. The most observable, destructive cause of surge damage is lightning. Through magnetic induction, even non-direct lightning strikes in the vicinity of exposed overhead electrical lines can produce 20kV surges. Surprisingly, however, lightning is not the most common cause of power disturbances. In many areas, 80% to 90% of surges come from utility distribution systems, inductive loads, electromagnetic interference and radio frequency interference.

Power-Ring is an electrical utiltity meter base extender. It fits between an outdoor, subscriber-located electrical utility power meter and the utility meter socket (or base). The Power-Ring Converter (see below) can tap the utility power, either before or after the meter and comes supplied with a blanking plate (see below).
Power-Ring Converter is a modular power converter that slides into the Power- Ring (see above). The Power-Ring Converter converts 240VAC at the meter to a nominal 12VDC whichfeeds either the outdoor battery module, or when a USP is not required, directly6 to the subscriber’s NID/NIU/INT.
Power-Ring Blanking Plate covers the opening in the Power-Ring when the Power-Ring Converter (see above) is not used.

Battery Module is a small plastic clamshell UPS battery module that uses a 7.2AH battery for 18W and 17AH battery for 30W. It is typically located out- doors at the subscriber’s residence. Batteries are ordered and shipped seperately. The Battery Module connects to the Power-Ring (see above) and provides 10 or 12VDCAt 30W and alarms to the NID/NIU/ONT.

30 Watt Battery Module AX-30-12D-B0 (no heater bracket, operation down to 0ºC) AX-30-12D-B1 (mid-temp heater bracket, operation down to -23ºC) AX-30-12D-B2 (low-temp heater bracket, operation down to -40ºC)

Home Converter is an indoor version of the Power-Ring Converter (see above). It is located inside the subscriber’s home and plugs into a standard AC utility outlet to convert the AC voltage into a nominal 12VDC. Low Voltage feeds from the Home Converter to an indoor or outdoor battery module. When the battery module or NID/NIU/ONT is located outside, a cable passes through an exterior wall to connect this product to the outside battery module or directly to the subscriber’s NID/NIU/ONT.
